Narrating Through Photography

Description
This workshop is an invitation to use photography — in any form it takes in our lives — as a mirror, a map, and a voice. No photography experience or professional camera is needed: a photo from a family album, an image taken with a phone, or a picture found along the way can all become tools for self-inquiry. Throughout this journey, we explore who we are, where we come from, and what stories we carry in our bodies, using the image as a starting point rather than an end in itself. This space weaves together photography, memory, emotion, and creative expression — open to anyone who wants to look inward through images. Here, the image becomes language; language becomes memory; memory becomes our own narrative.

Objectives

By the end of the workshop, participants will:

  • Understand photography as a visual language.

  • Explore identity, memory, belonging, and territory through photography.

  • Develop their own visual language and photographic perspective.

  • Explore colour as a visual and cultural element.

  • Analyze photographic portfolios and visual narratives.

  • Experiment with analogue and digital image intervention techniques.

  • Work with personal and family archives as photographic material.

  • Develop a personal photographic narrative or series.

  • Create a small body of work for potential exhibition.

  • Share ideas, perspectives, and creative processes with others.

Topics we will explore

Why do we narrate?
Exploring the human need to tell, preserve, remember, and transcend our stories through images, from early forms of visual representation to photography today.

Photography as visual language
Exploring composition, framing, perspective, natural light, the quality and direction of light, and basic artificial lighting setups as tools for constructing meaning in an image.

Colour, pigment, and meaning
Where does colour come from? Exploring natural pigments and their relationship with the earth and nature, as well as the symbolic, psychological, cultural, and emotional meanings we give to colour. We will also explore colour theory and how colour can become part of our visual language.

Identity, belonging, and territory
How do we construct an image of who we are? Exploring the relationship between identity, belonging, place, territory, culture, and the spaces we inhabit. How can photography help us look at ourselves and our surroundings from different perspectives?

The body, memory, and presence
Exploring the body as a place where experiences, memories, identities, and histories are held. The body may become a subject, a landscape, a symbol, or a point of departure for a photographic narrative.

Family, archives, and what remains
Working with personal and family photographs as fragments of memory. Looking at what is present in an image, what is absent, and what lies beyond what the photograph initially tells us. Exploring how an existing image can acquire new meanings when we return to it from the present.

Photography, memory, and transformation
How can an image change when we alter, fragment, combine, erase, draw over, or otherwise intervene in it? We will explore digital and analogue techniques including basic Lightroom and Photoshop, digital drawing, cyanotype, embroidery, and other forms of image intervention.

Looking at others, looking at ourselves
Photography is also a way of relating to the people and places around us. We will reflect on how we photograph our communities, our surroundings, and the realities we encounter, and on the responsibility involved in representing others.

Building a visual narrative
Bringing together images, ideas, colours, symbols, materials, and sequences to construct a coherent photographic story. We will look at how different photographers develop their own visual language and use their work as inspiration for our own processes.

Project planning and creative process
Learning how to develop and organize a photographic project, from the initial idea to its realization. We will use simple planning tools, including Gantt charts, to define stages, timelines, and practical steps.

Visual diary
Throughout the workshop, participants will keep a visual diary as a space for observation, experimentation, notes, images, ideas, and reflections that accompany their creative process.

Technical Skills We'll Build

  • Photography — composition, framing, and creative approaches to the shot itself.

  • Working with light — ambient and natural light, modeling light with studio/artificial sources, and understanding light quality and direction.

  • Camera basics — an introduction to manual and creative shooting modes (for those using a camera with these settings).

  • Color and editing in Lightroom — using color to shape the meaning and style of a project.

  • Digital intervention in Photoshop — collage, mark-making, and digital painting.

  • Analogue intervention techniques — cyanotype, fabric embroidery on photographs and photographic collage.

  • Sequencing and narrative editing — arranging images so that, together, they tell a complete story.

  • Project planning — organising a personal timeline to carry a project from concept to completion.
