What is Verano Vienés?

The name Verano Vienés was born from the desire to transform Vienna into a meeting point for Latin American visual artists during the summer season. The idea behind the festival was simple: instead of inviting photographers, filmmakers, and artists to experience Europe during the cold and distant months of winter, Verano Vienés invites them to come to Vienna when the city is warm, vibrant, and full of life. Summer is a season of encounters, movement, and openness. It is a time when public spaces become places for gathering, conversations emerge more naturally, and cultural exchange can happen beyond traditional walls.But the name carries another meaning in Spanish. “Verano Vienés” sounds like “verano, vienes” — “summer, you come.” It is an invitation: a call to artists, audiences, and communities to come together in Vienna and share stories through photography and film.

For us, Vienna is not only a location; it is a bridge. A city historically shaped by encounters between cultures, now becoming a space where Latin American voices can be present, visible, and heard. Verano Vienés is an invitation to come, to meet, to look, and to listen.

The festival was born from a simple but urgent observation: despite the richness and diversity of Latin American visual creation, there was no dedicated space in Europe where both photography and film from Latin America could exist together, in dialogue, and be presented from the perspective of those who create and live these realities. While pursuing her studies in Global Change and Sustainability, with a focus on migration and climate change, Eloina Viveros created Verano Vienés with the conviction that images have the power to preserve memory, challenge dominant narratives, and open spaces for dialogue.

Verano Vienés is the first festival in Europe dedicated exclusively to bringing together Latin American photography and film, creating a platform where Latin America can be narrated from within: through the voices, experiences, dreams, and realities of the people who inhabit it. The festival presents documentary and artistic photography, documentary and fiction cinema, exhibitions, screenings, workshops, and conversations that explore themes such as identity, migration, climate change, and the defence of territory.

From the work of children discovering their identity through cinema and ancestral languages, in collaboration with initiatives such as Oftálmica Kids Cine, Video Consortium and independent filmmakers to the voices of documentary photographers working in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, Verano Vienés brings together diverse perspectives that reveal the complexity and richness of Latin America beyond external interpretations.

Our mission

Verano Vienés exists to create a space in Europe where Latin American photography and film can speak from within — through the voices of those who live, dream, and transform our continent. We believe that our stories should not be defined by external gazes, but shared through our own perspectives, memories, and experiences.

Through visual storytelling, the festival explores four interconnected pillars: identity, migration, climate change, and the defence of territory. These themes remind us that every place, every community, and every individual is connected — that the changes affecting one corner of the world can create echoes far beyond it, like the butterfly effect.

Our vision

Our vision is to establish Verano Vienés as a lasting cultural space in Europe where Latin American visual narratives have their own voice, presence, and recognition. A space where our realities, landscapes, cultures, and dreams are not interpreted from the outside, but expressed by those who experience them.

We envision a future where Latin American visual culture has a permanent and recognised presence in Europe: a space where our artists, filmmakers, and photographers are not only invited to participate, but are part of the cultural dialogue shaping the continent.

WHO WE ARE?

Frederick Platt is the General Coordinator of Verano Vienés — a versatile artist whose career integrates music and photography. He combines analytical thinking as a software developer, with a deep creative sensitivity, allowing him to move naturally between different forms of expression and bring an integral, human, and reflective vision to the projects he leads.

This fusion is also reflected in his musical career as an orchestra conductor and singer — he currently performs as a member of the chorus at the iconic Musikverein in Vienna — and in his personal conducting projects, where he has demonstrated an exceptional ability to translate musical complexity into profoundly human experiences. His empathetic gaze, his dreaming spirit, and his commitment to beauty in its many forms make him a fundamental presence in the building of spaces for dialogue, creation, and encounter within the festival.

Eloina Viveros Galván is the Director and Founder of Verano Vienés — a Mexican creative with a deep passion for photography and the conviction that art is what keeps us human. In Mexico, she co-founded the Distancia Focal International Photography Festival and worked as a legal advisor for refugees at the southern border.

With a background in International Relations and studies in Geography, Global Change, and Sustainability, her own experience as a migrant has led her to build bridges between continents — combining research and artistic expression to explore human mobility, identity, and environmental transformation. She started screening films since she was 17, at the university in Mexico, because she believed films have a strong power to show different realities. As photographer one of her series about Identity was selected as the 20 finalists in Paris by the International Women in Photo and has exhibited her work in Mexico, Switzerland and Austria.
